Kyle's Trials: A self-guided mystery tour in city limits
Ahh, summer.
Birds chirping, flowers in full bloom, sun squeezing salt-filled sweat drops out of brows.
While the calendar doesn't agree just yet - not until next Tuesday - it seems to be here. And with that, it means it's time to get outside and enjoy the outdoors around us - some of it much closer than perhaps imagined.
The Columbia Nature Trail sits within city limits, just across the street from the St. Helens Elks Lodge on N. Sixth Street. It's a quick bike ride from our office and it explodes into overgrown trails winding their way around swamps and through trees before opening into a field of yellow and green.
Only a few minutes into the "hike" I came across three bullfrogs lazing the day away on the side of the trail in a shallow marsh. They didn't say much, let alone promote any beers.
As the gravel trail gave way to its natural dirt counterpart, I couldn't see any of the dozens of songbirds chirping over my head. While the birds were bashful, a couple of squirrels put on a tightrope act high above me in the trees, hopping from one branch to another.
Carrying on under the shady canopy I came across a couple different points in which the trail forked. Naturally, I went the opposite way the sign instructed. This so-called adventure I put myself on led me straight to roads, driveways and houses. Best to follow the signs around here.
About 20 minutes into the walk I began wondering if there was a destination at the end of this trail. The Internet search said there were botanical gardens in this neck of the woods, but I wasn't seeing anything of the sort.
Then, as if on cue, the trees parted and a field popped out in front of me.
Yellow Scotch broom dominated the landscape, with a few gnarly trees creeping over the top.
Finally the birds let themselves be seen. Some of them were even willing to pose for the camera for a second or two, even if others darted off as soon as they were in focus. In fact, I carried on a conversation with one bird for a minute or two. The bird chirped, I whistled and then we moved on, likely to never see each other again.
Walking out into the field, there was a steep embankment providing an effective barrier to my right. Down it lie nothing but more bushes and branches, making a descent unappealing.
As I progressed through this field, I found a shortcut that could have saved me a precious half hour. Park on the corner of N. Fourth and Lamont and you're right there. Do so at your own risk, I caution. If you do, you'll miss out on the bullfrogs.

former minister Peter Reith to become their organisational supremo in place of the self-effacing Alan Stockdale; perhaps enough of them had read Aesop's fable about the frogs who substituted King Log for King Stork to recognise the risks.
As I crouched to get the perfect picture of two of them sitting on a log, I imposed on the territory of another. "Meep" it piped - sounding more like the Looney Tunes' roadrunner than a frog - as it leaped three feet into the water.

When you move to a foreign country, there are plenty of things that you expect to be different: the food, the clothes, the architecture. But you don’t usually think of the mundane things like street signs. Most of Europe has standardized their traffic signs with color, shape, and helpful symbols. They look different from the signs in North America, but most aren’t so out of the ordinary as to cause consternation. (Usually, said consternation was caused by the decided lack of signs, at least in France. A popular proverb among ex-pats living in France was, “You can’t get there unless you already know how to get there.” Even born-and-bred Parisians carry maps of the city in their cars.)
We did, however, find a few signs that made us laugh. We enjoyed the digital signs spanning the French highways that gave driving tips in the form of pithy little rhymes. We liked the Ausfahrt signs in Germany because, well, sometimes our brains revert to 9 year old humor. We liked this sign in England because, what the heck is a bollard, anyways?
