Maintenance guide for expensive footwear

Ng dirt from the surface of the shoe. Rub small amounts of conditioner into the shoe, until the entire shoe has been covered with conditioner. After a couple of minutes, wipe any remaining conditioner off the shoes, as the leather will only absorb what it can.

2. Well polished :  Apply the polish first to a small, less conspicuous area of the shoe to test and be sure the colour is right. If there is not much difference in the shades then you can go ahead and polish the rest of the area. Castor oil is also useful for waterproofing the underneath of leather soles. To freshen up an old pair of shoes buy new laces, perhaps in a contrasting colour. Do not polish very frequently also.

3. Store well: Create special storage for special shoes. If you have a pair of good dress shoes that you only wear with your good suit, keep them free of dust by storing them in a box. Maintain the shape of the toe of softer shoes by packing them loosely with clean tissue. Or, use a cardboard, wood, or plastic shape designed for this purpose. It’s a good idea to invest in a shoe closet for your best pair. For boots that you take out only during winters it is best to store them in a linen bag so that they do not accumulate dirt.

4. Leather care : To clean patent leather shoes rub in petroleum jelly and leave for a while to soak in, the buff up with a soft clean cloth.  This will not only keep them shiny but also prevent them from cracking. Also never wrap them in a bag that is moist. The place where you keep your shoes is also important. Be sure that the place will not be such that will allow moss or mildew to grow on your shoes if kept for long.

5. Do not pile: Don’t pile the shoes on top of each other, as that might leave dirt or marks on your shoes. Always arrange them neatly in rows so that the shape of the shoes is not spoilt. Also if you want to wipe expensive shoes just dab a little mild fabric cleanser and just wipe it over your pair to remove any dirt stains.

Patent Leather. Shoes. Is Patent Leather Real Leather? | New ...

Yes. Patent leather is real leather , originally finished with a linseed-oil laquer, now usually with a plastic coating.

I first started wearing patent leather shoes in college . My college roommate my Sophomore year, and best friend until she died of cancer in her 40s, turned me on to the fact that patent leather shoes need virtually no cleaning , and, because they are leather, once they are broken in, they make you feel like you are wearing slippers .

I fell in love first with their ease of care – no regular polishing, yet they looked brand-new for years. I stayed in love with them because “Roomie” was right.

It took much longer to break them in , sometimes as long as a year, but once they conformed to your feet, you would never want to throw them out, much like a pair of cowboy boots I got several years later and still wear, thought they are nearly 30 years old.

Recently, I bought a pair of patent leather sandals . Every time I wear them, they remind me of Roomie and the many things she taught me. She was a Home Economics major. She taught me to look at the width of seams when I buy clothes. Wider seams mean better quality clothe s that are less likely to need repair.

She discovered CorningWare dishe s . The CorningWare baking dishes of the time are still going strong.  I have all the ones I got when we married. More importantly, I still have the Centura plates and bowls that I put on my wedding gift registry – 43 years ago.

We only received four place settings, and I raised my family of four on those place settings until my younger son was in high school and I decided I needed some extras. The Corning plant that had manufactured my CorningWare Centura plates burned down in the 1970s and was never replaced, so I could no longer get the CorningWare plates at department stores. I bought some plates of the same shape at a nearby outlet store for dishes.

Used to handling the CorningWare plates that almost never break , I broke most of my new settings within 18 months. My husband set out to look for used or remaindered CorningWare Centura plates and, over six months, acquired 12 place settings. One son is already eyeing them as he and his wife have also figured out how quickly most plates break. (You can buy some here. My style is the Coupe, but the narrow rim is also popular.
