School district says goodbye (for now) to a trusted friend

When most people make the decision to retire, it is a combination of joy mixed with recreation and volunteer time thrown into the mix.

After 38 years, Glendale Union High School District Administrator of Finance and Legislative Affairs Gene Dudo is happy to retire. However, it is also bittersweet because he made a lot of friends along the way, and that is the hardest part of saying goodbye.

Dudo served for 24 years in the GUHSD, 12 years with the Arizona Department of Education as an internal auditor, 10 of which were in the auditor department, and two years with the Department of Revenue.

"I'm 62 and you get up there in age and think about things you never had time to do," Dudo said.

Thinking about travel and doing the things he and his wife of 38 years, Sandra, have yet to do, is a priority. The Dudos have two grown sons: Brian, 30, and Matthew, 28.

Dudo said although thinking about school and school-related activities may not be his pressing concern for the 2011-12 academic year, it is something which will not go away for quite some time.

"Education is seasonal and this time of the year we start working on budgetary things," he said. "I'm going to miss those events, and I've always enjoyed putting together the budget and having all the pieces fit, and I really enjoyed dissecting it.

Before working with budgets, Dudo had a different take on the word "seasonal."

"I remember as a kid my dad had some apartments he owned," Dudo said. "I'd be thinking I should be out painting in July and August."

With budgets tight and companies having to find ways to balance the books, Dudo said it is always challenging.

"I think people have to be creative and flexible," he said. "I look at other budgets within the district and additional support when we've been trying to find alternative ways, such as tax credits and gate receipts, as to how we can enhance and expand revenues."

He said one example of different revenue sources the district has done would be paying rent on field lights and cellular antennas, which the district is renting to cell towers.

"We've tried to keep our costs down," Dudo said. "We're looking for ways to supplement our athletic programs."

"If you told me I can't leave tomorrow, I wouldn't be heartbroken, but I'm looking forward to that change in venue in my personal life. I told them (GUHSD board), ‘If I show up, you'll have to turn me around because the district is a wonderful thing. My wife is probably more worried that I'll be home, and she'll probably be wondering what I'll get involved in, and what closets I'm going to re-organize for her.
