As recently reported, the 72nd Los Angeles International Wine and Spirits Competition (LAIWC) held at Fairplex Pomona included entries from the world's finest producers. The results are in from what is considered the country's premier wine competition. Nearly 3,200 wines were entered, tasted by a 64-member panel comprised of international judges (winemakers/enologists, wine retailers, sommeliers, educators, restaurateurs, and wine journalists).
Different grape varietals and price ranges were represented, with a new point system introduced, acknowledging each varietal's special attributes and providing a new level of precision in the competition's wine ranking systems, a benefit for the competition and wine enthusiasts.
Australian enologist and longtime LAIWC judge Daryl Groom, "Groomy " as he is affectionately called, proclaimed the LAIWC is the best judging in the country.
"It is professionally run, great judges and entries of wines, and it operates smoothly. I think the thing that I like best is the caliber of the judges. You sit at a table with several professionals that not only know about wine, but have so much diversity. For a wine to earn a gold medal here - it's a damn good bottle of wine," said Groom, who participates in 5 to 8 International competitions annually.
The public will have first opportunity to taste the LAIWC's award-winning wines at "Fun Decanted" this Saturday, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
This unique fundraising event benefits the education programs of The Learning Centers at Fairplex and will focus on educating guests about wines while still providing a fun and memorable experience full of delicious foods, music and beverages (wines, spirits, beer, soft drinks).
Set in the breezy Wine & Spirits Marketplace at Fairplex, the evening offers guests a casual romp through the world by way of glass or stein. Pair your favorite drink with savory edibles from five gourmet food trucks.
Tickets are $50 per adult and proceeds benefit the educational programs of The Learning Centers at Fairplex. Guests can also sample the medal winners from our extra virgin olive oil contest. Gastronomy at its finest!
The LAIWC is committed to educating the public about wine, featuring industry experts with extensive knowledge about grape growing, selection, and tasting.
