Smith out to avenge botched martial arts debut
Smith issued this grim warning yesterday. He wants to avenge a second-round stoppage to Cleland when Smith made his debut in the Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) in 2007.
"I hope Liam trained very hard because giving him concussion and breaking his ribs before he took me down in the second round of our first fight was nothing compared to what I have in store for him. I will put his jaw behind his head this time," vowed Smith, gnashing his teeth in a venomous mood yesterday.
Their rematch will be three rounds over five minutes. But Smith trained so hard yesterday at the famous Durandt's Boxing Gym in Bree Street, downtown Johannesburg, that one would swear he was preparing for a 12-rounder.
He went four rounds on the heavy punching bag, the same number of rounds on pads with Nick Durandt's assistant trainer Kenny Mabunda and finished his session with two rounds on the speed ball.
Durandt was shouting instructions from outside the ring.
Durandt said: "He must be superfit so that he must make a serious statement tomorrow night. It's home-coming for him. He hasn't fought here for almost two years.
"He has fought twice in America and won both fights. So the only way for Jeremy to make a serious statement is by making serious damage."
Smith said joining Durandt was the wisest decision he had ever made.
"I used to be a bully but I've now learnt to be patient, use my hand speed and footwork," Smith said. He and Brendon Katz are so far the only two cage fighters at Durandt's gym.
"No advert for cage fighters, please," screamed Durandt." Jeremy and Brendon are are with me because they have talent to go to the top."
Smith has won nine straight fights since losing to Cleland, who has only three wins against a loss.
Their fight will be the main supporting bout to the Extreme Fighting Championship Africa heavyweight title fight between holder Norman "Chef" Wessels and Ruan "Fangzz" Potts.
The full bill comprises 14 bouts. It will be Extreme Africa's ninth MMA Championship this year. The action starts at 7.30pm.
