DISH: Jack's Coney's

If you're not in a Coney mood, you can get a regular hot dog for $1.25. Kids seem to like this vanilla version-one of them, in fact, was overheard using superlatives to describe it: "This is the most amazing hot dog I have ever had." Looked at more objectively, it's a solid dog: not too fatty, and the perfect length to fill the soft bun.

As for the Coney ($1.50), it's done in total conformity to historical standards (if historians bother to worry about Coney dogs). The dog sits in a mustard-lined bun and is topped with seasoned ground beef and finely cut fresh white onions. It's even better with cheese ($2).

You also can upscale your order to an all-beef Coney dog ($3). The gourmet version is sturdier, but the regular one didn't seem like creepy mystery meat.

The grill serves up hamburgers, too, starting at about $3 for the sort of thing you can pay 10 bucks for elsewhere. The beefy cheese JoJo burger ($3.50) is served on a nicely grilled bun-one of the little touches that set Jack's apart from the fray.

The kitchen also has a fryer, and when the team starts an order of something deep-fried, the device makes a giant crackling sound with enough volume to be heard all the way in the dining area.

The fryer's output includes the perch sandwich ($4), whose crunchy-coated fish merits multiple orders; and chicken fingers ($5), which come in crazy mutant sizes that fairly scream "not factory made."

The French fries ($2) are generously portioned, skinny and perfect. The coleslaw ($1) is the sweet and soupy sort that tastes right with the rest of the downscale menu.

It's a moral imperative to finish the meal with a milkshake ($2.50). Milkshakes are made right in front of you with hand-dipped ice cream and a mighty blender that purees it into a soothing icy swamp of sweetness. It's not chemical-smooth like fast-food milk shakes: It's ice-cream-shop fare.

Artisan cooking? I'm saying "yes." It's the art of pretense-free good ol' Americana. More, please.
