Junk Mail Call

Some time ago, I wrote an article explaining how decrepit I felt when I opened my mailbox on my 50th birthday and inside was an issue of AARP Magazine. I was appalled that AARP thought it necessary to send such an unwelcomed reminder of my half century mark, but they did.

That was a few years ago and it has been just recently that I have finally felt comfortable enough to collect my mail without trepidation of age offensive mail.

That was yesterday.

Today I collected my mail and was flipping through it as I walked back to the condo. The usual correspondence greeted me, phone bill, electric bill and that’s when I saw it. I gasped and stopped dead in my tracks.

Perhaps a poor choice of words considering what had frozen my steps. This particular piece of mail was from a local funeral home.

What?!

I dropped it immediately as if I held on to it for another moment, lightning would come down from the heavens and strike me dead. I was aghast! I stood staring at it as it lay by my feet.

Should I pick it up or should I leave it on the ground and allow it to sink into the pavement and be eaten up by the elements?

No, I’ll retrieve it, but only because I’m not a litterbug!

Opening it carefully I find only an innocuous survey.

Question No. 1: “How old are you?”

Translation: “When can we expect you?”

Question No. 6: “Are you aware that prepaid funeral plans exist?”

Translation: “At your age you better hurry on over with those plans!”

And the all telling question No. 8: “How much might you expect to pay for a funeral?” Box “A” starts with $2,000 bucks ending with box “F” at more than $10,000.

Obviously the box you check will determine if and how often you will be receiving future flyers from the funeral home.

These silly things would not bother the young. I guess at my age I can hear that old grandfather clock ticking somewhere in the back of my head and a reminder that the chime of that clock will eventually toll for me.

George Bernard Shaw said that “youth is wasted on the young” and truer words were never spoken. I have the same brain that I had when I was young and all those marbles still rolling around in my head, cannot understand the ravages of age.

Having the same fundamental notions about life does not change and if I had the physicality of my 30’s and the wisdom of my 50’s I could rule the world!

Age, you can't stop it so I see no reason to fight it and I certainly wouldn't want the alternative, but there are those times when we reflect on how quickly time passes and any reminder of the big sleep is a bit frightening.
