Summer basketball camp makes game a way of life
Imagine a world in which the game of basketball ruled, where aside from eating and sleeping, the only thing to do was play the sport that made Michael Jordan immortal.
That's been the way of life for over 200 students this week at the University of Montana's Overnight Grizzly Basketball Camp. The four-day camp for children in grades 5 through 12 concludes Thursday at the Adams Center.
It marks the seventh such camp for Montana men's basketball coach Wayne Tinkle, but this year seemed different to the 1989 UM graduate.
"There was a lot of anxiety heading into this summer's camps because we lost Coach (Andy) Hill and Coach (Kurt) Paulson," Tinkle said. "They were largely in charge of our camps for years. All of the coaches have chipped in and Coach (Freddie) Owens has taken over that role as far as organizing and running the camps, and they've come without a hitch so far."
In his first stint as the camp's organizer, Owens has done the head coach proud.
"He's just kind of the main guy as far as handling all the issues," Tinkle said. "Making sure it's organized and on time, he's done a super job."
Despite the change within the coaching staff, the 2011 camp has been a success. Tinkle said there are over 20 more participants than attendees at last year's event, which he attributes to his helping hands.
"We get great coaches," he said. "We motivate them to be enthusiastic and positive, and do a great job. That, along with our team's success during the year, I think that's the formula to get the kids coming back.
"I know our guys are doing a great job because parents are continuing to send their kids back here, and they're having a great experience."
In addition to the experiences offered by the camp, the minimal cost helps attract more athletes.
Most overnight basketball camps in the Northwest cost between $400 and $500, but Montana's is available for $275 at its steepest.
"We've got a very affordable price," Tinkle said. "Due to the economy of our state, we can't charge what a lot of other schools can charge, nor do we want to. We don't want to drive the kids away by having ridiculous prices."
That $275 allows a camper to sleep in a dorm room each night, eat three meals a day, and receive the guidance and mentoring of the near 40 coaches who help with the event each year.
Among those coaches are Tinkle's staff, all returning men's players, a few Grizzly football players and members of the Lady Griz basketball team.

&13;According to Barnes, all camp staff members and volunteers are selected on the basis of experience, the ability to serve as role models and a genuine desire to work with children respecting each girl as an individual and allowing her to feel good about who she is. All camp staff and volunteers participate in anextensive pre-camp training.
