The reason weighs 12 pounds.
My birthday present this year from my family was a Pug. I named her Penny. After putting our old dog, Socks, to sleep in January, I had been wanting a dog of my own.
While puppies are cute, they don’t really think the logistics through before they do something. I’m convinced they don’t think before they do anything, period.
While I love Penny dearly, her damage totals have been piling up. I think we’ll hit the $500 mark soon, if we haven’t already.
Penny came to me after getting lost in a bad windstorm in western Kansas. I adopted her when she was 6 months old, and she turned out to be quite a handful.
After dealing with separation anxiety and sleepless nights, Penny is finally acting like a normal, healthy dog.
Sort of.
The beauty of having Penny is that she loves to sleep, as does her owner. We make a pretty good team.
Usually when she sleeps she’s out of it for hours. She never moves. And after I wake up she usually stays in bed for an additional 20 or 30 minutes.
So a couple weeks ago when I woke up to blood-curdling barks and screams from her, I knew something was wrong.
While apparently bored before 6 a.m. one inauspicious Thursday morning, she decided chewing on my fan cord, which was plugged in, might be a fun idea.
It turns out it wasn’t such a great idea, and she got shocked as she ate her way through the copper wires. She also pulled the cord out of the wall and bent the plug quite a bit.
A trip to the vet and a ruined brand new $20 fan later, Penny got a clean bill of health.
I would like to say that she learned something from the ordeal, but she probably hasn’t. She still tries to chew cords as if they are bones.
While she can be smart when she wants (she learned to sit in a day), she has some catching up to do in other areas of life.
She likes to sit on the back of my chair in my living room. There’s a mirror behind the chair.
When Penny hops up on the back of the chair, she looks in the mirror and always acts surprised and jumps back when she sees her reflection.
Then one of two things happen. If she’s in a good mood she’ll lick her reflection. If she’s had a rough day she’ll growl, bark and spit at her reflection, causing the hair on the back of her neck to stand up.

Pugs can stay outside for quite a while, so long as it isn’t hot out. I have a pug, and he loves being out. He’s fine up to about 80 degrees. Over that, I hose him down and don’t let him tear around. But in moderate-to-fairly cold weather, he’s fine.
My pug also has a waist, and is quite athletic. Probably because we feed the BARF diet, no packaged dog food.
