Robinson headed for Tamworth
STEWIE Robinson has packed his saddles - and school books - and headed to Tamworth.
He was there to take on the cream of the country in the 40th Anniversary Australian Stockhorse Society world championship show.
At 17, Stewie is already a veteran of the competition circuit - he started riding, and working with, stockhorses (and Shetlands) at his Drouin West home aged just three.
Since then, he has racked up some big wins, including junior Australian Stockhorse rider at the 2007 Barastoc Horse of the Year, champion senior hack at West Gippsland and novice working Australian Stockhorse at the Geelong show.
And he has returned from Tamworth, which he described as one of the most competitive events in which he has been involved, with his head held high.
Riding his own horse (Wasmac Gimeadink, better known as Gadget) he managed second place in the station horse for riders aged 15-17, fifth in open hack mare, five years and over and over 15 hands, sixth in novice mare 15 hands and over and a top-10 rating, for five years and over and over 15 hands.
Riding Cannibal Creek Neilma (aka Ninny), a horse owned by one of his clients, Stewie picked up a sixth placing in the two-year-old hack filly division.
With a schedule like that, it's hard to imagine how the Year 12 Drouin Secondary College student managed to fit in any study.
His list of events would have filled a small town's phone directory and, when he was not competing, his horses needed to be maintained and prepared for the six-day extravaganza, which concluded on May 15.
"Gadget competed in open class as well as age group and Ninny was entered in six major events and plenty of others as well," Stewie says.
"It has been hard keeping the horses in peak condition because this event has come so late in the season."
Stewie doesn't mind admitting that although he trains, prepares, shows and competes, with his horses and for his clients, he still needs a helping hand from mum Kym with the family's stallion and 30 or so brood mares and client horses.
