Water quality worsens over past year; Texas ranks 17th among states

Water quality at Texas beaches has worsened over the last year, according to an annual report released Wednesday.

Texas had 704 incidents of closed beaches or posted advisories last year because of bacteria levels that exceeded the state's limits — more than three times as many as in 2009, the Natural Resources Defense Council found.

A high bacteria count in the water at beaches increases swimmers' chances of getting ear infections, skin rashes and stomach illnesses.

"It's a big concern," said Luke Metzger, director of the group Environment Texas, which released the national report in the state. "People shouldn't have to worry about getting sick from swimming in the water."

Texas ranked No. 17 among the 30 states for water quality in the survey, which is in its 21st year.

The report gave four of five stars for water quality to two of the state's most popular beaches, South Padre Island and Port Aransas.

But chronically dirty beaches in and around Corpus Christi helped drag down the state's overall ranking.

The report attributed nearly half of the state's beach closings and advisories to Corpus Christi and surrounding Nueces County.

Bacteria levels at Ropes Park and Cole Park exceeded state standards 33 percent and 29 percent of the time they were tested, respectively.

Meanwhile, Galveston County beachgoers for the most part enjoyed better conditions over the past year.

The county had 18 beaches, including Appfel Park and Stewart Beach, where water quality improved or remained the same from 2009.

The Texas General Land Office, which manages the state's coastline, attributed Galveston's improvement to below-average rainfall last year.

That matters because the more it rains, the more polluted runoff from cities pours into coastal waters.

Metzger said one key to reducing polluted runoff is new "green infrastructure," such as porous pavement that allows rainwater to seep into the ground rather than drain into sewers.
