Honduran emergency managers see the sights at Fort Pierce's UDT/SEAL Museum
FORT PIERCE — Two top Honduran Emergency Management officials and their aides visited the National Navy UDT-SEAL Museum on Hutchinson Island on Wednesday afternoon. The four men were escorted by Lt. Alfredo J. Moreno, program coordinator for the U.S. Army's Military Group in Honduras.
Lisandro Rosales, national commissioner of Honduras' counterpart of the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Administration, and Col. Jamilh Nasser, commander of the Honduran Army's Humanitarian Relief unit, are visiting emergency management operations at the Army's Southcom and the National Hurricane Center in Miami, the Florida National Guard and the Florida State Emergency Management Center in Tallahassee.
"We hope to learn how the United States handles emergencies and share information." Rosales said.
The four officials were interested in the Navy SEALs in the wake of the death of Osama bin Laden , Moreno said. "So this SEAL Museum is on our tour. It is a sort of R&R for them."
Capt. Michael Howard, U.S. Navy SEAL retired, executive director of the museum, said he was notified four days ago that the Hondurans were requesting a tour. "We are glad to be their host and to be able to help them learn about the SEALs, UDT men and the museum."
An attraction on the brief tour was the lifeboat from the Maersk Alabama freighter in which Somali pirates held Capt. Richard Phillips in April 2009. After one one pirate was captured, three still held Phillips in the 10,000-pound fiberglass lifeboat. Navy SEAL snipers on board the USS Bainbridge shot all three pirates dead and freed the captain unharmed.
Rosales and Nasser said they have learned a lot during their brief visit, which Moreno arranged before the group left Honduras. "We hope to learn even more in Tallahassee," Rosales said.
Howard said the visit by the Honduran officials is another example of the museum's impact on Fort Pierce and St. Lucie County. "We are becoming a destination for tourists and that will only be good for us and the community," he said.

The Navy Seals have always been the toughest bunch the military has ever trained. I've always bragged about those guys and what they do since have friends and family that have served. I just hope the country never forgets any of our troops when the war is finally over, these people give tremendous sacrifice for our freedoms yet ironically it's the Jane Fondas who would sell us out time and again getting the rewards from this country. This is an injustice that needs to be corrected.
SEALs don't really need the recognition, I mean that they prefer to remain anonymous for security reasons. Their satisifaction is internal. They are proud that they can do a good job for their country. And that is enough for them. There are people in the upper levels of government who know what they do and the SEALs get there satisfaction by knowing that their superiors know they do good work. I am sure they are equally appreciative of our good wishes and prayers and accolades for them-that just icing on the cake.
Sorry, my ex's dad was a Seal. He was never home but would impregnate his wife every year. She had babies they couldn't afford and had no help raising. He was crazy. She never had enough money to raise her family properly. He had to quit a year before he could have gotten full pension, basically he was an old, unstable alcoholic. He came home and sat and his wife had to get an accounting degree to feed her many children. What a guy. I am sure they all are not this way, but a life of this type of duty is not normal.
Yes, they are brave and deserving, and I am glad the people of this country recognize this. However, for their own safety, and the safety of their families, the less known, the better. It should never been revealed that it was even Navy SEALS that performed this mission, their unit should never been revealed. Much, too much is already known about them. They are much more effective working in the shadows, and in the cover of obscurity. I would hope that they would be forgotten and nothing more be said about them!!!
