Speed presenting 'Quilts from Kentucky & Beyond' starting June 19 ...
The Speed Art Museum is presenting the quilt collection of a prominent Louisville family.
“Quilts from Kentucky and Beyond: the Bingham-Miller Family Collection,” will be on view from June 19 through September 18.
The exhibition features 39 American quilts from one of the country’s notable private collectors, the Bingham-Miller family of Louisville, part of a family owned a media empire that included the Courier-Journal newspaper, television, radio and related businesses.
“Quilts from Kentucky and Beyond” traces more than 100 years of American quilting from the 1830s through the 1940s with fine examples from across the country, according to a Speed Museum release.
From the release:
Though diverse, the quilts of the Bingham-Miller Family Collection share many connections. All are documents of economic history, reflecting the development and expansion of textile production and distribution in the United States. The array of patterns and techniques illustrates quilts’ remarkable adaptability to changing popular tastes, the availability of materials, and the whims of individual quilters.
Kentucky-made quilts are highlighted, featuring an example from the 1850s or 1860s that uses silk and silk velvet to depict lush cherry trees and grape vines, according to the release. Other Kentucky pieces include a 1940s quilt inspired by Native American blankets from the Southwest.
The Bingham-Miller family began collecting quilts in the late 1970s, according to the release.
Over the years, their collection has grown to include more than 60 quilts. Eleanor Bingham-Miller became one of the founding directors of the Kentucky Quilt Project in 1981, which systematically documents Kentucky quilts, their makers, and their stories, according to the release.
In describing her interest in quilts, Eleanor Bingham-Miller has written: “ Working with quilts, both as a collector and as an exhibit curator has helped me to realize that for me the things that can make life tolerable are: beauty, grace, elegance and order. Combined with the sturdy nature of the fabrics used, and with their inherent promise of enduring for many decades, quilts provide counterweight to the frail and uncontrolled realities of our lives, whether cushioned by wealth or exposed to extreme poverty.”
The diversity of design and technique revealed in these quilts shows “the amazing creativity and skill of the women who made them,” stated Charles Venable, Speed Museum director. “Anyone who thinks a quilt is simply something to keep you warm at night has never seen quilts like these!
