Fayette County Fair to offer fun, patriotism

The event, which will end Aug. 6, will bring back some old favorites, including the Hogs Gone Wild Racing Pigs, and a line-up of entertainment such as performances by The Clarks and national country-recording artist Lee Brice.
Bill Jackson, president of Fayette County Fair Board of Directors, said the purpose, first and foremost, is to promote agriculture in the county.
"The 4-H clubs are such a big part of the fair," he said. "The reason for all of the entertainment is to draw people here so they can be exposed to the agriculture."
Every day from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m., Veterans of Foreign Wars District 23 and the Uniontown VFW will conduct the "The Pocket Flag Project." The program will take place in the 4-H building, said Walt Bumgarner, the 4-H County Extension director.
"Our goal is to get 1,000 kids to sit down and write notes to soldiers overseas, but I think we will get more than 1,000," he said. "I think this will be a wonderful thing."
Bumgarner said livestock participants haven't lessened over the years.
"It's amazing the number of kids and families that continue to have market-livestock projects at the fair," he said.
The Mon-Valley District Dairy Show, usually held on Labor Day, will be presented at the fair at 10 a.m. July 30.
Jackson said the family fun area will feature pig races, a petting zoo and the return of Elephant Encounter from Aug. 1-6. A white-tiger show will be presented the last six days.
The first four days of the fair, families can watch a BMX bicycle stunt event, a show featuring Frisbee dogs and the strolling act of Jerry Brown, the monkey man.
The strolling act Barney of Mayberry will have an individual impersonating Deputy Barney Fife (of the 1960s sitcom "The Andy Griffith Show") from Aug. 1-4 and a wood carver will be on the grounds July 28 to Aug. 6.
On July 31, Keystone Fireworks will present a display about 9:30 p.m.

Jackson said the fair has come to a one-year deal with Chevron to call the performance area Chevron Arena.
