'Same Time' falls short of Harrison standards

There's a lot to like in Harrison Hilltop Theatre's "Same Time Next Year," a romantic comedy about a couple, married to other people, who meet in a California inn for an annual tryst.

Adam Michael Lewis and Cari Downing play the couple, from the moments after their first encounter in 1951 and ending in 1975. In six different scenes, we check in with them over those 24 years.

The two have a nice rapport, with comedic and emotional lobs and volleys carried off nicely. Each of them makes notable but not drastic changes over the years. Lewis' George changes more emotionally, from a lying accountant to a devout believer in therapy. Downing's Doris makes physical transformations as well as changing fashions, including a series of ill-fitting wigs from the second scene on.

It is, essentially, an enjoyable enough evening.

But Harrison Hilltop - in its first show in its new location, The District Theatre in Rock Island - has spoiled us enough in the past three years that we were expecting more.

Bernard Slade's 1975 script is played as-is by the cast and director James Fairchild. The furnishings in the inn room don't change (there's a line in the script about how they haven't), and the time frame is left ambiguous, with the exception of mentioning wars and a few catch-phrases and attitudes of the respective times.

A 1978 film version of the movie has many fans (myself included), and you'll hear the Johnny Mathis version of the song from the film during the curtain call.

With the exception of the sex theme (no graphic dialogue) and a couple of dropped f-bombs, it's a pretty staid production. For a company that's made its reputation on inventive staging and new spins on classics, it's all the more puzzling.
