Songs from a distinctive decade in 'Shout!'

The song “Downtown,” the 1965 No. 1 hit by Petula Clark, kicks off the dazzling musical “Shout!”

Ironically, the musical flopped when it debuted in downtown Chicago three years ago.

Critics in major daily newspapers thoroughly panned it.

But completely reworked, “Shout!” had a delighted suburban audience on its feet cheering during opening night at the Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire.

“Shout!” runs through Aug. 14, and anyone who fondly recalls the smashing sounds that made the 1960s a joy to the ear will find the musical well worth the journey.

Director and choreographer Rachel Rockwell has taken the original “Shout!” and reimagined it with the benefit of five talented and versatile female singers, plus nine dancers including four men.

The styles evoke the era, meaning miniskirts, boots and puffy hair abound.

However, only the songs are the same from the 2008 show that played Drury Lane Water Tower Place in Chicago.

And songs there are!

There are 32 of them, every song a reflection of the decade between 1960 and 1970 that saw women redefine themselves in the world.

The five lead singers include Tammy Mader and Jessie Mueller, two Chicago-area favorites, who are joined by a trio making their Marriott debut — Carey Anderson, Brooke Jacob and Raena White.

Fitting the show’s thread of the progress of girl empowerment, the four guys basically are there to look good and dance to the varied styles of that distinctive decade.

All five women alternately take the lead in such songs as “Don’t Sleep in the Subway,” “Georgy Girl,” “To Sir With Love,” “Windy,” “Wishin’ and Hopin’,” “Wives and Lovers” and “These Boots Were Made for Walking.”

Even though “Shout!” is strictly a music revue, there’s humor throughout, especially a scene where hair spray (presumably fake) practically saturates the theater-in-the-round stage and a creative spoof of the James Bond theme “Goldfinger.”

Mader is a multiple scene-stealer for not only her singing and dancing, but also her playful gestures.

A rousing rendition of the title song ends the 90-minute, no-intermission show.

It seems the world took Petula Clark's song Downtown seriously. Now the first thing to acknowledge with a list like this is accuracy. It would be ideal to have agreement on what is a city. The problem, however, is the lack of consensus.

Second, today is Grand Old Days, a neighborhood block party that takes place in St. Paul, MN (where I currently live), so I thought it would it be fitting to post this record of "Downtown", since the benefits of city life she sings about still hold true 46 years later. The flip side, "You'd Better Love Me", is from Hugh Martin and Tim Gray's musical "High Spirits", and is also excellent, despite not charting.
