Living on $375 a Month, Yuma Man May Lose Healthcare

Yuma, Arizona June 28, 2011 - Randy Millard subsides on a monthly military disability check to get by.

"My solid income is $375 a month and after that, I start scratching, looking for a job here and there."

Millard is one of about 150,000 childless single Arizonans who depend on Medicaid .

"There are times where I need a trip to the hospital for something that I either can't take care of myself or it's just something that needs attention," says Millard.  "There's no way I can deal with it."

On June 24, the Arizona Supreme Court refused to block the state from trimming its Medicaid program, come July 1st.  Gov. Jan Brewer's proposed Medicaid plan would save the state over $282 million.  But that Medicaid cut could affect childless single Arizonans like Millard who live below the federal poverty line.

"I was informed that if I didn't have my paperwork in before July 1st, I would not be able to get Medicaid in the state of Arizona," says Millard.

So Millard put in his application last week and a Medicaid benefits worker called him back on Friday (June 24).

"And she says, 'Oh yes, you've made the application so you're in under the deadline,'" says Millard.  "For a single person that is not able to go out and get a 40-hour a week job somewhere, especially like with myself, I'm nothing more than just a laborer. So I get hard work jobs and I can't go out and do that anymore."

While Millard considers himself lucky, he says Arizona's poor need healthcare too, regardless of marital status or lack of dependents.

"There is a need for some of us to actually get the coverage and getting married to somebody, that's not a solution.
