At 100, he's still bowling over the competition

There are only a few "mortal lock" bets in sports. Rafael Nadal was a pretty sure thing at the French Open tennis tournament this year. The Undertaker was a reasonably safe bet to extend his Wrestlemania winning streak last April in Atlanta.

But it was 100 percent guaranteed, take it to the bank, that Harry Pepper would win the bowling gold medal in his age division at the National Senior Games currently being held in Houston.

Pepper, a native Houstonian, was the Today's Trivia: The bald eagle is our national bird and symbol of the United States of America. It is featured in the Great Seal of the United States. It is on the flip side of several coins, including the Washington quarter and the Susan B. Anthony dollar. One thing the bald eagle is not … is bald. Its head is covered with white feathers. So how come it's called a bald eagle?

• This is why I need new friends. Saturday morning, I went to Sam's Club with Reg "Third Degree" Burns and Biddy Boehme. Once inside, we went our separate ways. I don't have a Sam's card.

When I was ready to check out, I couldn't find them.

They were over by the pharmacy department, strapping themselves into the blood pressure testing machine. Yes, they were betting a slice of Sam's pizza on who had the lower blood pressure. Biddy won.

Each January, these two health nuts have a bet to determine who can lose the most weight. One year, Biddy won because he gained only 2 pounds while Third Degree gained 8. But overall, Third Degree is ahead, 4-3.

• Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Evan Longoria had a pretty OK weekend in Houston. Longoria, 25, led the Rays to a three-game sweep of the Astros. He went 8 for 14, including two doubles, three home runs and 10 RBI. He stayed at a swanky downtown hotel. And Saturday afternoon, he was limo'd to Reliant Center, where he signed his autograph for $89 a pop at the TriStar Collectors Show. Rough life.

• Each month, I pay my American Express bill, and a couple of days later I get an email saying they received the payment.
