Josh Siverson, NNU senior and economics and business administration major, traveled to Washington D.C., to compete as a finalist in the National Economics Insider Symposium (NEIS). Siverson was selected as one of 12 finalists in the Pearson’s Insider contest for his winning essay on the need for foreign language instruction in today’s global economy. The Insider contest was open to college students enrolled in an economics course during the spring 2011 semester. Students were asked to formulate solutions on how the economy can be changed for the better.

Siverson and his nominating instructor, Dr. Peter Crabb, professor of finance and economics at NNU, will be guests of Pearson at the second annual NEIS. In addition to competing for the contest-winning title, Future Economics Insider, Siverson will also have the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with some of Pearson's renowned economics authors during the event.

In late April, new members of the Junior League of Boise presented the Marian Pritchett School with a check for support as well as thousands of baby wipes, diapers and bottles during a baby shower at the school. After hearing about the budget shortfall at Marian Pritchett School at Booth Memorial this year, the women mobilized to help. The mission of MPS is to provide a confidential environment for pregnant and parenting young women who want to earn their high school diploma. The school has a store that is stocked with baby essentials like diapers, wipes, formula, and clothing as well as toys, books, blankets and other donated items. This year, because of budget constraints, the store was unable to stay stocked at pre-recession levels. Through the work of the Junior League, the total donations included 6,892 diapers, more than 6,800 baby wipes, formula for nearly 500 bottles and $12,883, all of which will go to help stock the school store at MPS. To celebrate the success of the project, the members threw the baby shower-themed party for 35 students at MPS.

Emily Miller, a senior at Kuna High School, was selected as a Distinguished Finalist in the 2011 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program. Miller was honored for organizing a number of projects, including a bullying prevention program, a greeting card project for the troops, a Christmas gift collection for underprivileged women and a fund-raiser to help students pay for the ACT college entrance exams.
