Canon Advances Remote-control HD Pan-Tilt-Zoom Cameras With BU-46H And BU-51H

Building on the success of its remote-control HD pan-tilt camera systems, Canon has introduced two new models with additional features to serve a wide range of broadcast and professional users.

Canon's new BU-46H outdoor and BU-51H indoor remote-control cameras deliver the exceptional HD video imagery, versatile performance and non-proprietary control of previous models while also adding new features that enhance their performance in situations where remote control operation is essential.

The cameras include a new 2X digital extender to double the image size of distant objects captured with the camera's 20x Canon HD zoom lens (4.5mm-90mm). Both cameras are equipped with three 1/3-inch (1.67 million-pixel) CCD sensors (1440 H x 1080 V) and also feature an advanced Canon Auto Focus function and Canon's sophisticated Image Stabiliser technology.

The imaging capabilities of the new BU-51H remote-control cameras are further enhanced with a newly designed Night Mode feature. This works by slowing down the shutter speed to a minimum of 1/4 (60i, 30F) or 1/3 (50i, 25F, 24F) allowing frame accumulation that elevates camera sensitivity.

A new feature of Canon's new BU-51H indoor remote-control camera is a built-in microphone with adjustable settings. Designed for environments where quiet operation is essential - including recital halls, lecture rooms and auditoria - the BU-51H features a maximum noise level of NC30. The BU-51H is also equipped with pan-tilt-zoom focus position information output for integration with virtual systems and other specialised applications.

The BU-46H outdoor remote-control camera features a weatherproof housing that meets the IP-45 specifications for dust and waterproof-efficiency. The camera also features a remote-control neutral density filter, while the housing includes a 'windscreen wiper' type blade to keep its lens port clear. The BU-46H can pan through ± 340 degrees and tilt + 30 degrees ~ -50 degrees in highly precise and smoothly choreographed movements specifically designed for multiple applications. The BU-46H is designed for exterior POV applications such as sports stadia, horse-racing tracks, broadcast television skycams and many others.

This isn't a reflection on Amazon, or Target where I purchased this product. I bought 2 sets at the end of 2008. Each package had a non-functioning receiver. I put the two defects in one package and returned it. The set I kept and used worked to specification until a few months ago. The transmitter 1 On button (most used button, for bedroom floor lamp) began to fail, requiring several presses to operate and today it quit working entirely. I'd already researched Woods Wire/Coleman Cable and realized I wasn't going to get far with any warranty request. I disassembled the remote and confirmed a bad switch with a multimeter. I opened the defective switch (destructive, no reassembling it) and observed some material transfer from the center contact to the switch 'dome' contact that may have been preventing current flow. I unsoldered the switch and replaced it with a switch from an answering machine keypad. It worked better than new because the replacement switch was better quality to start with. Two other switches on the remote were intermittently displaying a weak LED, they were failing also. I replaced all six switches and the remote works better than new, the crisp click of the replacement switches provides better tactile feedback and they work every time. I understand mass production and low cost products to meet competitive price points but it's unfortunate that the manufacturer didn't spend another 50 cents and assemble a reliable product that could last more than a year. Perhaps the newest units are 'upgraded' and my experience is not typical. From a use perspective, I love having a single remote on my nightstand to control 2 lamps and the rear surround wireless receiver for a Samsung theater without getting up. From a quality/durability perspective, you may want to look for competitive products.
