Priceless photo album plucked from the garbage still seeks a home

Perched squarely on a wooden crate and wearing a sturdy ankle-length skirt and a long-sleeved shirt, a woman patiently peels a potato in camp somewhere in the forest. In the snapshot, she's wearing a tall-crowned, wide-brimmed 10-gallon cowboy hat that looks like it's right out of a Tom Mix movie. 

Her name was Bess and the photograph was taken somewhere in Idaho or maybe even Montana around 1910. Those few tantalizing tidbits of information can be gleaned from the crinkled-edged photograph, but leaves a wealth of questions unanswered.

In another photograph the thin-faced woman poses matter-of-factly, almost bored, next to another woman, a sturdier gal nicknamed "Doe" who also wears a 10-gallon hat. They're seated in front of two thin, unnamed men next to a horse-drawn wagon, all apparently posed at the same camp. 

Though the connection between the women appears to be close, there is little known about the potato-peeling Bess. 

Doe, however, becomes a recurring character in a storytelling photo album that leaves more questions unanswered than it explains. 

The gloss may be fading on the surface in some, but the timeless images of a family's adventure remain as poignant, as historical as it was when those black and white images were carefully mounted in an album. 

Rugged faces of pioneering folks who struck out into new personal business adventures in the early 1900s peer back at you from the simple black pages, still remarkably well preserved. Children smile, ladies pose in simple dresses, men gallop on horses and hold up fish that surely made for delicious meals. 

The images speak of special places and special people who lived their lives generations ago. Recognizable landmarks vary from Stanley, Idaho to West Yellowstone, Montana. 

They tug at those curious of West Yellowstone history and of those who appreciate genealogy. And clearly they tell a story, one that ties generations together.

Yet as poignant images as they may be, those images have not yet found a home.

Found treasure

Those photographs are precious to someone. Anna-Lee Roberson was sure of that.

And the long-time resident of West Yellowstone couldn't stand the thought of them being wasted. 

She knew that the first instant she glimpsed the photo album lying among garbage in the old West Yellowstone open pit dump.

It was in the late 1960s or early 1970s when the antique shop owner found the album. Someone had inexplicably tossed the book of memories into the garbage.

These are often the scenes depicted on holiday cards.

When there is no snow, the view can be stark and somewhat bleak, especially on the many gray days. Even this may have some beauty of its own to those who can see it.

One of the most stunning sights is following an ice storm with the sun glinting off encased trees and wires. This, however, can be a very destructive time for plants and utilities. The winter is a time for the fields to rest. Livestock, however, will take extra attention as their natural food sources are probably not available. Though the scenery may be lovely, winter driving takes extra care in country where roads are sometimes not cleared quickly

Many people have have a dream of being able to look out of their windowns on a snowy cold winter day and watch the snow flakes coming down with a forest back drop. Most country folks like to take advantage of a beautigul snow fall by hooking up a horse and cart tor ide through the countryside.

Another positive feature of a winter landscape in the country is to have a frozen pond where the country folks can take their children ice skating during a mild winter day.

Christmas is a very special time in the country where their is white blanket of snow to add to the winter scenery in order to it give it that special charm for the children and the adults....
