Cotter stands out for MHHS

Mountain Home Bomber head soccer coach Bryan Mattox doesn't mince words when describing his physical center defender from this past season.

"When you watch us, you know who Jeff Cotter is," Mattox said. "He stands out back there."

Cotter became the eighth member of the Bomber soccer team to play for the East squad at the Arkansas High School Coaches' Association All-Star soccer match last week at Razorback Field in Fayetteville.

"He looked really good, I thought," Mattox said. "He made some plays on the ball. That's what he brought to the table for us. He cleaned everything up, and he was kind of the captain back there."

With the level of talent at the exhibition, Cotter had to keep his head on a swivel at his center defender position.

"It was so much different," Cotter said. "Everyone was on another level. I had to pay a lot more attention. I'm used to relaxing and coming in every now and then. I had to be way more involved in this game."

Cotter played 20 minutes in the first half and returned for more minutes in the second half of the East's 4-2 victory over the West team.

"I felt a little rusty," said Cotter, whose last competitive soccer was played in early May. "I didn't do much between the high school season and that game. I just played around with some friends every now and then."

Mattox said Cotter, who led the Bombers in takeaways last season, was a strong leader as the only returning starter on defense for Mountain Home.

"He had three sophomores around him," Mattox said. "At the end of the year, we brought Todd Bowman in, and he was a senior. But, it was (Bowman's) first year to play. The Jeffersons (Kevin and Devin) were sophomores. Justin Linck was a sophomore, then there's Jeff back there that's the only returning starter. All those guys are physical and can run, but he was the only one with experience. Even when things didn't go well for him, he kept it together. We really needed him for his leadership."

Cotter became the sixth boys' soccer player from Mountain Home to be selected for the all-star match in the last four years. Two boys' coaches have been selected in that span for the Bombers, who were eliminated in the semifinals of the Class 6A State Tournament last season after three straight appearances in the state championship game.

"He received compliments from coach (Walter) King at Searcy and the El Dorado coach this year," Mattox said. "He's definitely one of the reasons we went to the championship a couple of those years and to the semifinals this year.
