LS West girls finish seventh in national track meet in Oregon

June 28--Over the weekend, members from the Lee's Summit West girls' track and field team competed in the Nike Track Nationals meet in Eugene, Ore. On Saturday, the Titans finished seventh overall by posting 7,420 points (the elite 12-team meet scores points like a decathlon), so LS West just missed repeating in fourth place by only a slightly better finish in one of its events.

"I think we did very well," LS West distance coach Jesse Griffin said of the seven girls who competed. "I think the girls had a lot of fun and got to compete at Hayward Field in conjunction with the national meet. They got to see that and be in the same atmosphere as the professional athletes in our country. There are several girls on our team that will be competing at the US junior meet in the near future."

The Nike Track Nationals is a true team event where each squad has to depend on the scoring from every individual on the roster. So after the meet, Griffin had to highlight Lauren Cheadle's gutsy performance that helped the Titans finish in the seventh spot.

On Friday night, Cheadle, the now graduated senior, got sick and had to be taken to a local urgent care facility. With competition the following day and Cheadle expected to compete in the 100-meter dash as well as the long jump, she battled a 103-degree fever

"(She was) just feeling like death, you know not feeling very good," Griffin said.

According to Griffin, by the afternoon her fever broke and Cheadle entered her events. She finished eighth overall in the 100 (12.42 seconds) and seventh in the long jump (17 feet, 1 1/2 inches).

"If we would have taken a blank in any of those events, we're last," Griffin said. "That was pretty tough for her. She was pretty much wiped out after ... the meet, but that allowed us to do well."

The other Titan teammates included: Jacque Timberlake, 11th in the 400 in 1 minute, 3.39 seconds; Kennadee Williams, seventh in the 800 in 2:20.77, a personal record; Chelsey Phoebus, third in the 1,600 in 5:02.19; Essence Chalmers, fourth in the shot put with 39 feet, 6 1/4 inches; Katie Kelly, fourth in discus, 109-2; and Brittany Kallenberger, fourth in high jump, 5-5 3/4 and third in the pole vault in 11-6 3/4 .
