Mile posts: Woman is running and meditating across Iowa

I’ve got to hand it to Jeanelle Boyer to try something adventurous.

The Iowa City yoga instructor and biology professor on Wednesday embarked on a 312-mile run across Iowa from Council Bluffs to Davenport. At each stop on the route, Boyer, pictured, will lead what she calls a “light-hearted, all-levels yoga practice for the citizens of the community. She plans to end the run July 1.

Her goals for the “L.O.V.E. Run 2011″ are four-fold, according to her website. They are:

(1) Bring people together in celebration of community and our beautiful planet.

(2) Raise awareness for sustainable agriculture and the benefits of local, healthy food

(3) Raise at least $10,000 for two non-profits that support sustainable agriculture: Practical Farmers of Iowa and Slow Foods USA.

(4) Spread some love and joy … elevate and uplift

The run across Iowa already has been quite an adventure for Boyer. At about mile 20 on the first day, she started to battle an achy IT band and an achy foot. She made it 41 miles before just past her original intended stop in Hancock.

Yesterday’s 42-mile run from Hancock to Adair wasn’t quite as successful. She wrote on her blog that “my foot and my knee (IT band) hurt pretty bad and each step seemed so uncomfortable.” Boyer walked and jogged 17 miles into Atlantic. Then, around mile 20, her IT band got worse and walking became difficult.

“I hobbled/walked for the next 8 miles … still feeling super emotional and yet falling in love with the beauty of the country side,” Boyer wrote of the mix of emotions.

Things brightened at the end of her run while she was in Anita, 8 miles from the end of her day. “The walking was going okay but my trail shoes were starting to give me crazy blisters, so on a whim I switched by to the vibrams … and a miracle occurred! All my knee pain went away and I ran the next 8 miles, feeling better than I had all day! … I felt so good I went 3 more miles than planned,” Boyer wrote.

Boyer’s planned route Friday is a 41-mile run from Adair to Van Meter. She will run cover the 19 miles from Van Meter to Des Moines on Saturday and then lead a Yoga in the Park exercise at Gray’s Lake from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. The public is invited to attend, as with her other stops. The yoga will be followed by a picnic with music and local food.

TRC Resources » Miracle Mile Community Practice

Miracle Mile Community Practice was established in 1998 with an interest in Narrative Therapy and providing affordable counseling to the local community. Narrative Therapy views the problems people face as residing within a larger cultural context shaped by media, professional disciplines and institutions that wield power. This not only determines what we perceive as normal but provides the lenses through which we see ourselves and each other.

The organization currently has a staff of eight and has developed relationships with graduate programs and partnerships with professional organizations in the city and beyond.
