Question: I have tried different diet pills to help lose a few pounds. I know ephedra is bad, but what about ephedra-free products on the market?
Answer: Back in the '70s, popular stimulants phentermine and ephedra were marketed as Fen-Phen to the public for obesity treatment. Therefore, ephedra started to be included in diet pills.
The United States has very loose control of dietary supplements, and therefore, this herbal stimulant was not tested prior to its being sold by the millions in the U.S. market. One maker of ephedra-containing products, Metabolife, received 14,000 complaints of adverse effects, and the New England Journal of Medicine cited cases of cardiac and sudden death on products containing ephedra. In 2004, the Federal Drug Administration officially banned the sale of ephedra.
Common ingredients in diet pills now are caffeine, taurine, tea extracts and other herbal supplements such as Rhodiola rosea extract, but remember ingredients, as with ephedra, still aren't scrutinized in a laboratory prior to sale.
Roots such as rhodiola often can be used for increased energy and alertness. Although there is less research and longitudinal data on newer traditional roots and herbal extracts being used as diet pills, the verdict is still out.
Some studies have shown adverse effects with ephedra-free supplements such as Xenadrine EFX. The American Journal of Medicine found a 7 percent to 12 percent increase in blood pressure with the use of ephedra-free diet pills.
For some people, the effects are not noticed but still are harmful. When your blood pressure is elevated by an herbal supplement, this means arteries are constricting from a pharmaceutical agent, not physical exertion. Increased blood pressure is a signal of constricted arteries, which means the heart has to work harder. As well, long-term increases in blood pressure can be harmful to your cardiovascular system.
There also is question as to any substance that elevates metabolism in an unnatural way. Your body has many hormones that are in a very fine balance to keep your metabolism working just right. Although there are some with hormonal imbalances that effect weight control, for others, this artificial increase in heart rate and overdrive could later affect that balance system once you are off the diet pills.
