Scientists say that, because the geographical distribution of Pine Barrens tree frogs is just now becoming understood, they have no way of comparing historical versus present distributions.
Populations in all three regions have dwindled from pre-settlement levels because of agriculture, development, and plant succession following the interruption of the natural fire cycles in Pine Barren tree frog habitats.
The tree frog has depended on wild fires in the past, because it depends on habitat that is stressed for water. These frogs are likely to be found where disturbances have occurred, such as by logging or construction, where secondary vegetation growth is taking place.
Breeding habitat in the Carolinas is evergreen shrub-herb bog along small backwater tributaries in the Sandhills.
Florida and Alabama breeding sites are similar to those in New Jersey and the Carolinas: acid, hillside seepage bogs with small pools of clear, acid seepage water and a diverse wetland flora of Sphagnum moss, sedges, rushes, bladderwort, pipeworts, sundews, pitcher plants, clubmoss, and filamentous algae.
Possible predators for Pine Barren Tree Frog tadpoles are adult bronze frogs ( Rana c. clamitans ) wherever their geographic distributions overlap.
The frog’s diet is made up of mainly crickets, but they also eat mealworms, waxworms, fruit flies, flightless fruit flies (genetic mutation), fireflies, moths, and possibly small amounts of fruit.
Be sure to pay attention to the frog’s markings or you may get confused. There are nine different tree frog species in the Sandhills, and four true frog species. There are also five kinds of toads.
According to Richmond County Wildlife Officer Bryan Smith, the Pine Barren Tree Frog isn’t doing too well.
“It being in this specific region is something,” he said. “The places they’ve been found in the past, they are no longer found there so the population for sure is in tough shape.”
If you find or see a Pine Barren Tree Frog, be sure not to disturb it or the habitat surrounding the frog.
According to Piedmont Wildlife Diversity Supervisor Jeff Marcus, the good news is that most of the places these frogs can be found are already under protection. He said folks in the county should be proud to live in a special ecosystem that is unique and supports many animals that are not found elsewhere.
