Throughout Kristl Bridge's childhood, her German-born mother cooked all their food, made the family's laundry detergent from scratch, and canned seasonal fruits and vegetables to eat throughout the year.

Bridge followed in her mother's footsteps; she does a lot of canning and preserving, makes her own candles, soap and other home supplies. She keeps chickens and goats. But she has often found it difficult to find the materials necessary to do all of this.

"A lot of those skills have been lost," she said, or are disappearing among younger generations who buy their food and other home-making supplies at a grocery store.

Her new business, Portland Homestead Supply Co. , is the fruition of those frustrations and her recognition that Portlanders are combining a do-it-yourself spirit with an embrace of locally made products and food.

Portland Homestead Supply Co., located in Sellwood , opened June 14. Bridge hopes it will serve as a one-stop shop for Portlanders wishing to get back to the basics. The store carries supplies for canning and pickling food and for making soap, candles and laundry-soap. It also carries natural cleaning supplies, garden tools, bulk animal feed, and soil nutrients such as jersey greensand and blood meal.

The store also hosts a range of classes on canning, tool sharpening, butchering, cheese making, and "bath bombs," orbs of bath salts that immediately start fizzing and disintegrating when they hit the water (they happen to be particularly popular with kids, Bridge reports).

Bridge, who co-owns the business with her husband Doug, estimates that about 100 people visit the shop each day. "We've had a wonderful response," Kristl Bridge says. "More come through the door than we anticipated."

Kristl Bridge, a new business owner, first thought about starting Portland Homestead Supply Co. in January. In February and March, she and Doug scouted potential properties. After securing a bank loan, which Kristl described as a "really scary step" and Doug called a "leap of faith," Portland Homestead Supply Co. opened.

Finding appropriate vendors was the biggest challenge. It was important, Kristl says, that the products be as local as possible. But in a few instances, supplies come from outside the country, such as wooden spoons made in France.

"It was much easier to find things made (outside the country)," Kristl said. "It took a lot of research to find local products.
