Want good eating? Go catch some sand bass

The weather has been extremely hot, but the fishing hasn't been of late.

We've had some recent good rains, so that should make fishing improve. Usually after a good rain the water washes out and the fishing starts improving drastically.

Fishermen who like the big flipping stick and big jig when there is a little bit of color in the water should try the East and West forks of Percy Priest Lake.

There has been some color in the area rivers, and until it is pulled out the flippers should have a field day.

Early-morning fishing on Percy Priest has been fair to good recently. When we're talking about early morning, we're talking about 4-5 a.m. before the sun comes up.

Surface lures have been productive, and also there have been some really nice fish taken on crank baits this time of the morning. They're usually in depths of water from 1- to 4-feet deep.

Catfishing with jugs and trot lines continues to be good. There have been some really large catfish taken recently.

There have also been some reports that the yellow stripe or the sand bass are beginning to show up in the East and West forks of Stones River.

So maybe now is a good time to fill up that freezer. These little ole sand bass don't get real large, but they make up for the size with the taste. They are really good fish to eat.

Center Hill update

Fishing on Center Hill Lake is still good. They're catching a lot of fish, but they're fishing water that is a lot deeper than people like to fish.

These fish are being taken in depths of water from 15- to 25-feet deep on the artificial worm, big jig and big spinner bait.

The lower end of the lake is still producing a lot of walleye. Tim Staley, the ole guide, reports that they're brining in some nice fish. There is a size limit on these fish, so be sure to check your TWRA fishing guide before you go.

These fish are being taken on a variety of lures, including the Hot N Tot, the nightcrawler and spinner rigs, as well as bright crank baits that run 15- to 20-feet deep. These fish are usually out in the main river channel and on the ledges and humps.

Get ready hunters

Hunters, now is the time to break out that shotgun or rifle and get it cleaned up.

The squirrel season will open Aug. 27. This is also the day that the TWRA has designated a free hunting and fishing day.Remember that anyone born after 1969 must have a safety course to hunt.
