Review: Windows Phone appeals to business
It had Office, a suite of programs for word processing, spreadsheet work and more. But, and this surely must have been a first for any word processor, it lacked copy and paste. That oversight has been amended but the new update due in the autumn promises to offer a lot more. The Telegraph has been given an early look at the update, code-named Mango.
Some business users were appalled when the much-loathed Windows Mobile 6.5 was replaced by a new system with no backward compatibility to the thousands of enterprise apps that were in common use. As a result, many companies have been buying up remaining stocks of Windows Mobile 6.5 hardware so they won’t lose these familiar programs such as business card readers, time billing and accounting apps.
Many apps are now being re-coded for Windows Phone and the range of apps, though a country mile short of Apple’s iPhone range, has now reached 18,000. Nearly all the apps look better than their rivals, like the excellent British Airways app which is available for iPhone, Android and BlackBerry. It’s essential for all platforms but the Windows version will have impressive 3D views of the plane’s cabin to help you choose your seat.
Many apps are aimed squarely at business. Microsoft has included support for Office 365, the web-based office suite launched this week. So there’s a Lync application which will arrive with Mango. This provides ways to connect with colleagues via instant messaging, arranging online meetings and more. It also lets you search for corporate contacts.
Other Office applications are hugely improved, with assistance creating formulae in Excel, templates to create documents on the phone, and easy access to documents even if they’re stored remotely.
What set Windows Phone apart before was the way the information you needed was found on the home screen in “Live Tiles”. These are improved further so that the Weather tile, for instance, instead of showing a generic weather view of sunshine shows the current temperature and cloudiness, say.
The Microsoft search engine, Bing, is integral to the phone and with Mango it gains improved voice search and even Bing Vision which lets you look at a restaurant menu in French, say, and translate it near-instantly to English. It’s impressive and could help at that overseas dinner.
Switching your company’s fleet of phones is not a task to take lightly, especially if you’re used to the business excellence of a BlackBerry. Until it arrives, it won’t be clear whether Windows Phone Mango will be good enough for business to replace Windows Mobile 6.5. But if, as expected, Nokia’s Windows Phone handsets arrive at the same time, it could be a powerful reason to upgrade.
