Kids like Shakespeare, too

Nine-year-old Carter Briggs gets pretty busy in the summer. Between baseball games, Lego camp, Grandparents University and an invite-only karate sword class, he’s got a favorite summer appointment: to take in all the Great River Shakespeare Festival (GRSF) he can.

The Bluffview Montessori student has got oodles of energy, but when it comes time to take in a GRSF performance, he’s all eyes and ears. Last week, he went to his eighth performance (he saw “A Comedy of Errors” twice); since he saw his first, “The Taming of the Shrew,” he’s been hooked.

“’The Tempest’ was my favorite,” said Carter. “I thought it was a really cool one and I like the story. And I liked the scenes and stuff.”

Over the years, Carter’s memory stretches to the things he enjoyed the most, from the hilarity of “A Comedy of Errors” to the performances that had the neatest sets and costumes. But its not just the festival that Carter has come to love, but also the works of Shakespeare himself, and he’s got a wish list of plays he hopes that GRSF will perform in the coming years.

“I haven’t seen ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream,’” said Carter. “But I know the story.” His teacher read part of it aloud in class, along with part of “Macbeth,” which he thought might be a little too scary for the younger kids. He’s got a hankering to see both, along with “Othello,” one day. “I like the tragedies,” he said.

Carter and mom Jenel saw the Apprentice performance of “Hamlet,” and landed front row seats. After the performance, Jenel spoke with one of the actors who played the ghost of Hamlet’s father, who noticed the youngster sitting in the front row, enthralled. “The Hamlet actor ghost said ‘I was doing the performance for you,’” he recalled.

Last Thursday, Carter got the chance to go behind the curtain, and watched some “Henry IV” actors practice a sword fighting scene. He said his own karate sword fighting classes probably won’t include the same intense, dramatic fights, at least not for a long time, but it was neat to watch.

When Carter grows up, he’d like to be a famous chef, a baseball player, a weapon designer. Or, he said, maybe the kind of person who dreams up the ideas for really great movies, kind of like a modern-day Shakespeare for the big screen.

For Carter, the world of Shakespeare has come to life through the GRSF performances.

Twisted Hauntings - A Ghost Story - Be Tween Talk Kids Forum

So this is my new story Twisted Hauntings, I know my other story was called Twisted Hauntings but I never really got to write it so, I'm starting it over, but with a different concept. And I'm sorry about my stories filling up the whole stories thread, I just don't like making one thread for them because I like to see how many views I get for one chapter, but if that's what it's going to come to, I'll do it. And also, I'm still writing my other story "The Unexpected" but it's coming to an end in a couple chapters. Well enough of my talking, let's start the story. The beginning of summer is always the best, smelling the summer air, kids flaunting around spreading joy, happy that school's out. This of course was going to be a summer to remember for me. My twin sister and I were going out to the lake for summer, along with my mother and father, my two older brothers, Michael and Trey, and my two other friends Keke Jordan and Keisha Marsh. I knew that this summer was going to be special in every way possible, I was planning on living it to the fullest. Besides, my mother always told me "Dream like you'll live forever, and live like you'll die tomorrow", I've always lived by that motto. By the time we reached the lake it was 4 o'clock. My eyes crossed over the lake, it was beautiful, I came close and stared down at my reflection in the lake. My dark brown hair glistened and my brown eyes sparkled. My twin sister, Jazlynn made her way to me and stared down at her reflection also. Me and Jazlynn were identical, the only way you could tell us apart was because my hair was slitly lighter than hers. Me and Jazlynn did everything together, nothin could break us apart, but this summer that changed. Once we were all settled in the house that sat next to the lake, Keke, Keisha, Jazlynn, and I decided to explore the house. We found a small pathway and we walked through it. The pathway lead us to a basement, and we decided to make it our secret hideout, if we ever wanted to get away from all the cayos my family usually causes. "Hey guys look over here!" Keke yelled across the room. We all gathered around where Keke was standing and stared down at a small doll house that was broken and shattered. Keisha then pointed to a broken mirror, my sister Jazlynn looked through the mirror, expecting to see her reflection, but instead it showed a little girls reflection who looked a couple years younger than we were.
