Keeping kids in play

If you’re a parent, you probably know what happens by the end of June. The novelty of summer vacation from school is beginning to wear off. Kids may be getting bored and a little whiny.

By now, some have spent too much time indoors watching TV and playing video games. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends children spend no more than two hours a day on “screen time,” which includes watching television and playing video games.

Uh-oh. Lots of kids are likely to be surpassing that when out of school.

Time to hit the refresh button on summer plans.

Between now and the end of August, there are plenty of things for kids to do that will keep them safe, healthy and active.

Here is a sampling, plus tips for eating well.

For the elementary-age set

Both the Manatee County Parks and Recreation Department and Manatee County YMCA offer full- and half-day summer camps that keep kids busy through activities such as swimming, games, scavenger hunts, archery, and field trips, and the opportunity to play with new friends.

Good news: Many of the locations are still accepting new campers.

The park department’s Summer Blast Camp is at G.T. Bray park and Lakewood Ranch High School. Weekly prices are $85 for full days or $65 for half days. Scholarships are available.

At the YMCA, summer camps are being held at the Lakewood Ranch, Parrish and Bradenton branches. YMCA members pay $90 per week; non-members pay $105. Financial assistance is available depending on need.

For tweens and teens

Who says camp is “babyish?” Most likely, children in middle school. But though they’re way past loving Big Bird, they aren’t necessarily old enough to be left at home alone.

“They are probably the age that needs supervision the most,” said Jackie Riordan, association administrator of the Manatee YMCA.
