Grape expectations at LLCC
Stressing the importance of education in the expansion of Illinois’ wine industry, a partnership with Lincoln Land Community College was announced Monday that eventually will include credit classes in viticulture, the growing of grapes.
“One of the key factors in growing the Illinois wine industry is education,” said Bruce Morgenstern, chairman of the Illinois Grape Growers and Vintners Association. “It’s one of the reasons we’re growing in large waves.” The partnership with LLCC officially began Monday with the college hosting the three-day Illinois State Fair Wine competition, judging for which formerly was held at the University of Illinois in Urbana. The competition features about 125 amateur entries from the Midwest and nearly 300 Illinois commercial entries. Results will be released near the end of the week. Plans under development at LLCC include credit classes in viticulture and wine dinners and classes through the culinary arts program.
